Green Thumb
Cultural practices : Rhubarb is sown in April-May or August-September, in pots or terrine filled with good potting soil improved with well-rotted compost, in a shady place. Emergence generally takes 10-30 days, keep the substrate moist but not soggy during this time. When your plants reach the 4-5 leafs stage, transplant to the garden. They need winter protection the first year.
Soil : Rhubarb requires a rich or previously enriched soil (3 to 4 kg of compost per m²).
Spacing : Transplant it in partial shade, making sure to leave sufficient space for its development, ie from 1 m to 1.5 m².
Growing tips : Rhubarb is generous but it is greedy, an annual contribution of compost is strongly recommended.
Harvest : Do not be in too much of a hurry, the first harvest should not take place before 2 years after sowing; otherwise the plant will be exhausted. The petioles are harvested in May-June; a second harvest arrives in SeptemberOctober. The rhubarb petioles can be kept for a few days in the vegetable drawer of the refrigerator or a few months, cut into sections, in the freezer.
