Uchiki Kuri is a Japanese type Hubbard with a dark red-orange skin, and delicious cream-coloured flesh. Its flesh is flavourful, firm but never stringy, which makes it very popular in Japanese and Thai dishes. Uchiki Kuri plants are robust and productive even in our climatic conditions, providing 3 or more fruits per plant. The fruits average 1.5 kg each. Early variety.
Green Thumb
Cultural practices : warm season crop, which requires temperatures of 18 ° C to 27 ° C. Seedlings indoors three to four weeks before the last spring frost or directly in the garden.
Soil : it requires warm, fertile, well-drained soil and full sun exposure.
Spacing : sow each seed 2.5 cm deep, in mounds 1.5 to 2 m apart. Thin out later, keeping the best two or three plants.
Growing tips : water a lot to conserve moisture, incorporate organic matter into the soil and mulch after planting. In cooler regions, protect young plants with bells or tunnels. Types with running vines can be installed on solid supports.
Harvest : harvest them when the flower has fallen from the end of the fruit. Before harvesting winter squash, make sure that the fruit is fully ripe and that the rind is hard enough.
