Your favourite scrubber actually comes from a vegetable, a long ridged type of squash. The early maturing dark green fruits are 50-60 cm long. This variety is not sensitive to day length. It is adapted to long summer days. The very long vine needs to grow on a trellis until maturity. Remove all the flowers from the vine below 1.20 m if any. Fruits are ready to pick when the green skin has turned dark yellow or brown and starts to separate from the fiber. Start from transplants.

Cultural practices : warm season crop, which requires temperatures of 18 ° C to 27 ° C. Seedlings indoors three to four weeks before the last spring frost or directly in the garden.

Soil : it requires warm, fertile, well-drained soil and full sun exposure.

Spacing : sow each seed 2.5 cm deep, in mounds 1.5 to 2 m apart. Thin them out later, keeping the best two or three plants.

Growing tips : water a lot to conserve moisture, incorporate organic matter into the soil and mulch after planting. In cooler regions, protect young plants with bells or tunnels. Types with running vines can be installed on solid supports.

Harvest : harvest them when the flower has fallen from the end of the fruit. Before harvesting winter squash, make sure that the fruit is fully ripe and that the rind is hard enough.
